INTERLAKEN
Excursions

The central location in the heart of the Bernese Alps makes Interlaken ideal  Starting point for exploring the Bernese Oberland and the rest of Switzerland. Some of the most beautiful excursion destinations in the Alps are right on your doorstep in Interlaken!  Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, starting points for the Jungfrau region, can be reached in just 20 minutes. The well-known skiing and hiking area Meiringen-Hasliberg is also just a stone's throw away.  For those traveling by train, we recommend a panoramic train ride from Interlaken over the Brünig Pass to Lucerne.  

HIKE AUGSTMATTHORN

The spectacular hike over the Brienzergrat to the Augstmatthorn inspires with an unforgettable view of Lake Brienz and the Bernese Alps. From the Lombachalp it takes 1.5 hours to climb steeply up to the Brienzergrat and then on to the Augstmatthorn. From here the view is breathtaking. Harder Kulm, Interlaken's local mountain, can be reached via the Brienzergrat in about 2 hours. A certain level of fitness is required for the hike to the Augstmatthorn.

COG RAILWAY TO THE JUNGFRAUJOCH

The cog railway runs from Lauterbrunnen or from Grindelwald  through magnificent mountain scenery to Kleine Scheidegg.  At the Kleine Scheidegg you change to the cog railway of the Jungfrau Railway (Jungfraubahn). The Jungfrau Railway, opened in 1912, runs through a 7.3 km  long tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch to the Jungfraujoch terminus at 3,454m. You can enjoy a magnificent view of the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding mountains.

HIKE  THE EIGER TRAIL

The Eiger Trail is a 8.2km long spectacular hiking trail right at the foot of the Eiger. The impressive hike begins at the Eigergletscher station  and leads in about 2.5 hours to the Alpiglen train station in the shadow of the imposing Eiger north face. The Eiger Trail is also suitable for families with children. Tip: Start the Eiger Trail hike in Alpiglen and hike up to the Eigergletscher station. It's more strenuous, but you always have the 1600 meter high north face of the Eiger in front of you.

SCHYINIGE PLATTE COG RAILWAY

The trip on the historic cog railway from Wilderswil to the Schynige Platte is a very special experience. The 1893 commissioned  Railway line masters a height difference of 1420m over 7.3km. The leisurely ride offers  a spectacular view of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz as well as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. In 1914, the route was electrified as one of the first mountain railways in Switzerland. Most of the more than 100-year-old locomotives date back to this pioneering era. Tip: A 5-hour hike leads from the Schynige Platte along one  Panoramic hiking trail  via Bachalp-See and Faulhorn to Grindelwald First with a spectacular view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

BOAT TRIP ON LAKE THUN OR/AND LAKE BRIENZ

Be enchanted by the beauty of the Bernese Oberland! Enjoy the fascinating mountain panorama around Lake Thun and Lake Brienz during a relaxing boat trip. There are regular scheduled boats on Lake Thun from the pier at Interlaken West train station. AARE GORGE NEAR MEIRINGEN

The imposing Aare Gorge is located near Meiringen, about 30km east of Interlaken. The gorge was created by the river Aare, which has washed its way through soft limestone over thousands of years.  The Aare Gorge is 200 meters deep and just 1 meter wide at its narrowest point. A well-developed path leads through the gorge, and it takes about 30 minutes to walk the entire Aare Gorge. If you are arriving by train, it is best to get off at the Aareschlucht-West stop, then hike through the gorge and get back on the train at the Aareschlucht Ost stop to Meiringen and on to Interlaken. The Aare Gorge excursion is ideal for families with children.

INTERLAKEN: HIKE  UP MT. NIESEN

The Niesen: The entire Bernese Oberland at one's feet. Experienced hikers can look forward to a very special and above all scenic hiking experience: the hike up the Niesen. From Mülenen - the valley station of the Niesenbahn - it's a steep 1000 meter climb  for 2.5 hours to Schwandegg. This is where the part of the hike with the best views begins. From Schwandegg, it takes 2 or 3 hours, depending on the route you choose, to the summit. The view of Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and the surrounding mountains is overwhelming.  As an alternative, you can take the Niesenbahn to Schwandegg and start the hike from there.

INTERLAKEN: SKIING 

The ski areas of the Bernese Oberland are among the best in the world. Around 800 km of well-groomed slopes await the visitor in the midst of the enchanting mountains of the Swiss Alps of the Bernese Oberland. The slopes of places like Lauberhorn, Wengen, Schilthorn, Meiringen or Adelboden will make the dreams of every skier become true. There are also smaller, family-friendly ski areas such as Diemtigtal or Beatenberg right on your doorstep.

HIKE FROM MÜRREN TO KIENTAL

The hike from Mürren via the Selfinenfurgga to Griesalp in the Kiental is one of the classic hikes in the Bernese Oberland. From the sun terrace of Mürren (1650m) the hike leads through beautiful alpine pastures, scree and snowfields to Selfinenfurgga at 2612 meters above sea level. You are constantly accompanied by a magnificent alpine panorama.  The hike over the Selfinenfurgga to Griesalp takes about 7 hours. The hiking route is part of the Via Alpina. A good level of fitness and surefootedness are required for this hike. If you want to do the hike in 2 daily stages, you will find two simple accommodation options on the way with the Rotstockhütte and the Bundalp.

HIKE FROM ISELTWALD TO GIESSBACH

From the train station Interlaken-West you take the "Postauto" Bus (line B103) to the village of Iseltwald, idyllically situated on the shore of Lake Brienz. The ride from Interlaken-West to the station Iseltwald Dorfplatz takes about 30 minutes. From Iseltwald a well-maintained hiking trail leads parallel along Lake Brienz to Giessbach. The easy hiking trail opens up breathtaking views of Lake Brienz and the surrounding mountains again and again. After about 2 hours you reach the imposing Giessbach Falls, where the water masses of the Giessbach thunder over 14 steps 400 meters into the depth. Especially after rainfalls and during the snowmelt in spring, this is a particularly impressive spectacle. From here it is only a short distance to the historic Giessbach Hotel. The time-honored Grandhotel Giessbach was opened in 1875 and is now a protected historic site. On the terrace of the hotel you can enjoy culinary delights with a magnificent view of Lake Brienz. From the Giessbach Hotel you can take the historic rack railroad (built around 1879) to the "Giessbach" boat landing stage. A 1-hour, leisurely boat trip on Lake Brienz will then take you back to Interlaken-Ost. This day trip is ideal for families.his is your Services Page.
